High-Risk Merchant Account

A high-risk merchant account is a card processing account for businesses that banks see as more likely to have chargebacks, fraud or regulatory issues.

What makes a business high-risk

Banks and processors label a business high-risk when they expect more chargebacks, fraud or legal complexity than average. Common reasons include:

  • The industry, such as CBD, nutraceuticals, travel or subscriptions
  • Delivering goods or services long after payment
  • Recurring billing or free-trial offers
  • A short business history or no processing history
  • Past high chargebacks or a MATCH listing
  • High transaction amounts or international sales

What's different about a high-risk account

Expect more detailed underwriting, more documents, and terms that can include a rolling reserve or higher rates than a standard account. In return, you get a processor that understands your industry, which helps you avoid sudden account freezes.
