Underwriting
Underwriting is the review a processor or bank does before approving a merchant account, checking the business, its owners, its website and its risk.
What underwriters review
- The business: legal registration, tax ID, time in business and what it sells.
- The owners: identity verification and, often, a credit check.
- Financials: bank statements and any past processing statements.
- The website: product descriptions, prices, refund and privacy policies, and contact details.
- Risk: industry, expected volume, average sale, chargeback history and any MATCH listing.
What underwriting decides
Underwriting decides whether an account is approved and on what terms. That includes processing limits, pricing, payout timing and whether a rolling reserve applies.
How to make it faster
Complete applications move fastest. Missing documents and website gaps are the most common causes of delays. Our approval checklist lists what to prepare, and our article on how long approval takes explains the timeline.
