ISO (Independent Sales Organization)
An ISO is a company registered with the card networks through a sponsor bank to sell and support merchant accounts on that bank's behalf.
How ISOs fit into card processing
Only banks that are members of the card networks (acquiring banks) can sponsor merchants to accept cards. An Independent Sales Organization is a company registered with the networks through one of these sponsor banks. It finds and supports merchants, while the bank handles settlement and network membership.
ISOs, agents and referral partners
- ISO: registered with the card networks through a sponsor bank, and often takes on some financial responsibility for its merchants.
- Agent: sells merchant accounts on behalf of an ISO or processor and usually earns residuals.
- Referral partner: introduces businesses and earns a referral fee or a share of revenue.
